Do great surgeons have a "God complex"?

l've seen both sides up close.
Some surgeons move through the OR like they're untouchable. They rarely ask for help. They dismiss the team. When things go wrong, the blame always belongs to someone else. That kind of ego doesn't just poison the room — it can quietly put patients at risk.

I've also come to understand why this mindset can take root. The intense, hierarchical pressure of medical school and residency rewards swift answers and absolute authority, which over time can harden into an unhealthy belief in one's own superiority.

Furthermore, in some environments, exceptional technical skill can shield physicians from normal accountability, allowing ego and problematic behavior to flourish. And our culture has long elevated doctors to positions of near-absolute authority, which can quietly distort how some begin to see themselves.

But the surgeons who truly last and deliver the best outcomes carry the immense weight of their patients' struggles while staying kind and humble.

They remain willing to listen — to their patients, their teams, and their own limitations. They know the final decision rests with them, and they accept that responsibility without hesitation. They stay masters of their craft... but they are humble masters.

Confidence is required in the operating room.

Arrogance is dangerous.

The difference changes everything.
