🚤🌊 KISMA is excited to offer another season of FREE boat washes to help prevent the spread of harmful aquatic invasive species throughout the Keweenaw’s lakes and waterways!

A quick boat wash is one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect the places we love to boat, fish, paddle, and swim.

In addition to our boat wash events, we’ll also be attending outreach and tabling events throughout the season, where you can learn more about aquatic invasive species, ask questions, and discover simple ways you can help protect our local ecosystems.

Getting our hands dirty with invasive species science 🌱🪏
We spent the morning with Tara Bal’s Forest Health Summer Camp class at MTU’s Ford Center exploring one of our most persistent invaders—giant knotweed. Students got a close-up look at how manual management works by targeting the plant’s underground energy reserves and depleting carbon stored in its rhizomes.
We dug up rhizomes to uncover just how extensive knotweed growth can be below ground—seeing their size, structure, and spread firsthand. Lots of thoughtful questions and great discussions about ecosystem health, plant ecology, and invasive species management.

Having a great time today managing glossy buckthorn while supporting Emma’s MTU Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship project!

Her research is looking into root carbon storage depletion with the repeated stripping of resprouts using the critical period cutting protocol.
