Laptops, power and hard drives

Make sure you shut down your laptop before moving them, for several reason - i will talk about two expensive ones.

1.) The power cord needs to be removed before moving from a flat surface. A we have seen many, many times, moving laptops to an uneven surface can break components on the INSIDE your machine. When exposed, the tip can act as a lever, and pry the DC jack from the mainboard (a $200+ repair) and is very expensive and time consuming to repair - most folks choose to buy a new computer after this happens. So unplug before you move, and preferably close the lid.
2.) Failure to shut-down the machine before moving can result in damage to the hard drive, system files, and all your personal data. A very expensive lesson to learn, all this can be avoided by properly shutting down the machine before moving. The read-heads of a hard drive hover of the medium like a record player needle when running, and any vibration or bump can cause the read heads to contact and damage the media, and components to the tune of several hundred dollars. So power down, put it to sleep, standby, whatever makes the fan stop spinning and the lights go off, so yourself so money and tears.
