This can be the result of running ethanol gas in your outboard motor. Sure it will run on it but it will cause the high pressure pump to come apart and it turns the filter black. This can be a very expensive repair. Some of these pumps are close to $1000.00 just for the pump.

This is what can happen if you don`t replace your water pump on a regular basis. This one was 4 years old and we had to cut through the drive shaft housing and cut the drive shaft. Then we had to replace the drive shaft and put everything back together. A lot of $$$$$$
