At Acton Academy, school looks a little different.

We’re a Socratic, child-led, whole-child education microschool…but what does that even mean? Well, here’s 5 things you’ll only see at Acton:

1. Daily goal-setting & reflection

Learners begin the day by setting clear goals and end the day reflecting on their progress, potential hurdles, and possible solutions. They learn to manage their time, track their work, and hold themselves accountable.

2. Students create the studio rules

At the start of each school year, learners work together to create a studio contract that defines how they treat each other and how the community runs. Every student must sign it and the entire process is 100% student-led.

3. Leadership opportunities every day

Whether it’s leading a discussion, mentoring a younger learner, or organizing a team, leadership is something every child practices regularly. It’s a daily part of being in a school where adults take the back seat.

4. Town hall problem solving

When challenges come up, learners gather for a weekly Town Hall meeting to discuss the issue and work toward a solution together. Again - these are led and run by the student studio managers.

5. Voting for studio leaders

Learners nominate peers they trust to take on leadership roles and vote as a community - practicing responsibility, courage, and character. These student leaders learn firsthand the challenges of managing a group and addressing group concerns.

The goal isn’t just academic growth - it’s raising young people who can think independently, lead with confidence, and take responsibility for their learning and their community.

Grades used to be the golden ticket. Study hard, score high, get a good job. That was the formula.

But that formula was built for a world where knowing things gave you an edge. AI just blew that world wide open. Now, any child with a phone can look up an answer in seconds.

What they can't just search up is how to think through a hard problem or how to read a room. Or how to keep going when something doesn't work the first three times. These soft skills are nothing but that. They're survival skills for the world our children are actually going to live in.

At Acton, we've been building these skills long before AI became a headline. Because we always believed education should prepare students for real life, not just the next test. Education needs to teach children how to think, adapt, create, and lead.

If this resonates, follow along. There's a lot more where this came from.

It's become so common for children to dread Sunday evenings...and Monday mornings might even be worse because your child doesn't look forward to school at all. But honestly, who wants to spend M-F in a setting that is stripping them of joy and curiosity? Unfortunately, the rigidity of a traditional model can often do just that.

That's why it's such a top goal at our school to ensure that school is a place of joy (without removing challenge). Here's a bit of a contradiction...challenge doesn't strip children of joy because overcoming small challenges and pushing yourself actually releases dopamine!

So it's entirely possible to have a joy-filled and academically rigorous school. And we know that because we're doing it here...along with 300+ Acton sister schools across the world that have proven that this model works! If you're unsure, we get that!

Just give us a call and see the school for yourself. You just can't convey all this through an Instagram post...you have to see the model in action!

Want to help your child develop a growth mindset? Teach them to embrace challenges instead of fearing failure. The key is shifting their perspective from “I can’t do this” to “I can’t do this YET.” A simple word can completely change your child's mindset.

Research shows:

~ Praise for effort, not intelligence, builds resilience. (Dweck, 2006)
~ Learning through failure creates deeper understanding. (Metcalfe, 2017)
~ Autonomy in learning fosters self-motivation. (Deci & Ryan, 1985)

At Acton, building a growth mindset is a top priority. Here's how we do it:
✅ "Failure" is reframed as a step toward mastery, encouraging persistence.
✅ Learners set their own personal goals and meaningfully reflect on why some were not met.
✅ Hands-on challenges that involve trial-and-error build confidence in problem-solving and adaptability.

Struggle isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather, just a necessary step on the journey to success. By teaching students that struggle doesn't reflect a fixed level of intelligence, we empower them to take risks, push themselves, and keep going even when things get tough.

Most traditional learning relies on listening and memorizing, but that doesn’t lead to long-term retention. Real learning happens when students are actively engaged, solving problems, and applying what they know.

That’s why Acton focuses on hands-on, real-world learning experiences that are active learning. When students are involved, they deepen their understanding. In fact, research on active versus passive learning found that active learners retained 93.5% of information after one month, compared to only 79% for passive learners, a meaningful gap that actually only grows over time.

And that makes a big difference in how they grow. If you’ve ever wondered why learning “doesn’t stick,” this is worth seeing for yourself.

At Acton Academy, we built something different. Here, your child is seen as a whole person, not just a grade. They’re guided to lead, solve real problems, and develop a deep love of learning.

We believe the world needs curious minds, kind hearts, bold thinkers.

Our families chose something different because:
~ They value character and academics
~ They want independence, not constant supervision
~ They believe in purpose over pressure
~ They see education as more than worksheets and test prep
~ They value a tight-knit community of families with shared values.

If this sounds like you, then it's very likely that our school will be a good fit for your family. The only way to know is to come in and tour your school, with your child! Send us a DM and let's chat!

People often ask what makes Acton different. The truth is, it’s not just one feature. It’s how everything works together.

The environment, the expectations, the ownership students take, and the real-world challenges they work through all combine to create something unique. It’s a shift you can feel when you walk in.

That’s why a tour matters. Seeing it in action brings clarity that words or social media can’t fully capture.

What if the key to better focus, creativity, and emotional resilience wasn’t more worksheets, but more unstructured outdoor play?

Right now, children are struggling in ways we can’t ignore:

~ Creativity is declining. Studies show children are less able to think outside the box than they were 30 years ago.
~ Emotional regulation is weaker. More children are struggling with anxiety, frustration, and impulsivity.
~ Stress levels are higher than ever. The pressure of long school hours, rigid schedules, and constant testing is taking a toll.

Instead of doubling down on academics, what if we did the opposite? At our school, we prioritize 2 hours of outdoor unstructured play daily for our mixed-age Sparks studio (ages 4-7/8) and also regularly for ages 8-11.

And the benefits speak for themselves:

~ Creativity soars. Open-ended play strengthens problem-solving, imagination, and innovation-key skills for academic success.
~ Emotional regulation improves. Nature, movement, and social play help children manage big feelings and build resilience.
~ Stress melts away. Play releases endorphins, reduces cortisol, and makes learning joyful again.

The research is clear: more play = better learning. Is your child getting enough time to be a child?

What if school actually made your child love learning?

If your gut tells you that something is off with traditional schools… you’re not alone. Children weren’t meant to sit still for hours, memorize facts, and follow rigid rules that kill creativity.

There’s another way. A better way.

A microschool where:
~ Students learn at their own pace
~ No homework, no meaningless tests
~ Real-world skills matter more than grades
~ Play, curiosity, and independence come first

Your child deserves a school that works for them, not the other way around.

Rethinking education? Let’s talk.
