Easter lilies kill cats.
This is not an exaggeration.
→ ALL parts of the Easter lily are toxic to cats: flowers, leaves, stems, pollen, and vase water
→ A cat licking pollen off its fur is enough to cause kidney failure
→ Symptoms begin within 6-12 hours: vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite
→ Kidney failure develops within 24-72 hours
→ WITHOUT emergency treatment: fatal in 3-7 days
→ EVEN WITH treatment: not all cats survive
ALL lilies in the Lilium and Hemerocallis families are deadly to cats:
→ Easter lily
→ Tiger lily
→ Asiatic lily
→ Daylily
→ Stargazer lily
→ Japanese show lily
"But my cat never eats plants."
→ They don't have to EAT it
→ Brushing against it gets pollen on their fur
→ They groom themselves
→ They ingest the pollen
→ That's enough
If your cat contacts ANY lily:
→ Call your vet or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) IMMEDIATELY
→ Don't wait for symptoms
→ Early IV fluids can save their life
→ Every hour counts
SAFE ALTERNATIVES for cat households:
→ Orchids (non-toxic)
→ Roses (non-toxic)
→ Sunflowers (non-toxic)
→ Snapdragons (non-toxic)
→ Ge**er daisies (non-toxic)
Millions of Easter lilies are in homes this month.
Millions of cats live in those homes.
