☀️ Why Summer Camp Matters More Than Ever ☀️

When the school year ends, learning doesn’t simply pause—it changes shape. However, without the daily structure of classes, recess, meals, and movement, many children experience what educators call summer learning loss: a gradual decline in academic skills, routines, and readiness for the fall. But learning loss isn’t only academic. Summer can also disrupt healthy habits, physical activity, and social connection, all of which are deeply linked to how children learn and grow. At Derby, we believe that summer should be a season of joyful growth that supports the whole child while keeping curiosity, confidence, and connection at the center.

That’s why experiences like summer camp play such a vital role in helping children return to school ready to thrive. Derby Summer Programs is made up of intentionally designed research-based programming aligned with best practices and emerging educational insights. As a result, our programs are not only engaging and exciting, but also help mitigate learning loss and support continued growth.

On the hunt for inspiration for some classic summer fun? Look no further! Our students tackled some pretty incredible STEM projects last school year, including building model rockets 🚀

One of the GOALS classes offered to seventh and eighth graders took students through the process of building two different model rockets. The first allowed students to investigate how modifying the rocket tail fins impacts the trajectory of the rocket, while the second looked at how the shape of the nose cone impacts flight.

Clearly, students had a 💥blast💥 building and launching their very own rockets—tag us if you give a project like this a shot at home this summer!
