Performing some large-scale UAS LiDAR mapping for utilities on Hawaii Island.

Normally for these projects, we would deliver a GIS file for the utility companies to plan with, but in this case, we are working directly with tree trimming crews. The goal is to provide something they can easily use on a tablet. These crews know almost every tree on the island, recognizing trees even via the lidar viewer. The pins show them where the encroachments are, then they can zoom in and assess the work that needs to be done.

All the tools and surveys I’ve created for these crews have been designed with direct input from them. Making it easy, simple to use, and effective. I really have to thank them for helping create the vision and success of the entire project that started in 2024.

Fire mitigation work has been a big deal lately, so helping them know their exact clearances and being able to visually show it has been a powerful tool. As usual, a hell of a project, with many new brain cells created (maybe a few new gray hairs as well).

New replacement magnets. My other ones both flew off on the Hamakua Coast! If you find them, give me a call, they have my number :)

Big Island Tree Service supporting wildland fire mitigation work with our drone lidar. The amount of trees they have worked on since the beginning in December 2023 is baffling!

Can’t say it’s often I catch a rainbow during a drone mapping mission!

This is a badass project supporting the trail planning for Koa’ia Tree Sancuary just outside of Waimea, Big Island. They wanted drone lidar and a contour map to support trail design and ensure our lungs don't explode on the incline! It will be somewhere around an eight-mile loop with some hefty elevation gain. Within the unit, there are gorgeous drainages and flora. It's such a cool area, and I encourage people to check out their public lands.

As a bonus I produced tree canopy data so they can compare growth over time. Large scale tree planting has taken place here and it will be cool to compare canopy area numbers and growth rates.
