The name chosen for this art reflects thoughts of the desire to grow progressively, thriving, and successfully. Instilling intent while cutting the image, each time the art is printed, we hope to grow inspiration and nurture creativity.

HOʻOHENOHIʻILEIHALIʻAALOHA

The Ahaʻāina Piha Makahiki, or the first birthday celebration, is an important milestone in the life of a child. Family and friends are invited to rejoice the new child surviving the first year of life’s challenges.
Hoʻohenohiʻileihaliʻaaloha is our celebratory first birthday gift for the newborn child of Paul and Ashley Kema. The ʻohe kāpala medium was chosen to illustrate the child’s name, Hiʻileihaliʻaaloha. The lei of pua niu was selected as the child’s father always made papale niu, coconut frond hats. The center of the lei represents the piko, the umbilical cord. This symbolizes both genealogy and unity within the ʻohana.

KUKUIHOU

Kukui was important in practice. All parts of the tree were used: the trunk, leaves, flowers and nuts provided a multitude of uses in everyday life in Hawaiʻi. One of my favorite uses is in the making of the condiment inamona, the most important ingredient in making poke! As one of the first five designs that went into production in 1982, this kukui began as a pareu print. The layout was repetitive to run at the base of the fabric to allow the pattern to 'surround the person in enlightenment'. In the late 80s, we used the original image to create a layout of bands for a simple, effective new design for shirts and dresses.
