Every facility hits the same fork in the road: repair or replace. The instinct is to replace, but the math usually says otherwise. A commercial treadmill runs $6,000 to $8,000 new, and most repairs that scare people (motors, decks, consoles) land between $300 and $900.

The rule we give clients: repair before replace. If the frame is sound, fix it. Frames outlast every wear part on the machine. You're almost always replacing a $500 problem with an $8,000 solution.

Replacement makes sense when parts are discontinued, the frame is compromised, or you're stacking repairs every quarter. Everything else is a repair. Which way is your budget leaning this year?

It still turns on, so it's fine. "That's the most expensive sentence in facility management.

There's a belief that fitness equipment is either working or broken. On or off. Fine or dead.

The reality: most commercial equipment fails gradually, and "still turns on" tells you almost nothing.

What "still works" can be hiding:

→ A belt slipping just enough to strain the motor every session
→ An incline motor out of calibration, grinding and displaying 7%, delivering 2%
→ Worn bearings thumping and clicking toward a seizure
→ A frame bolt backing out one workout at a time.... It's that rattle that shouldn't be there.

By the time a machine won't turn on, you've usually blown past the cheap fix and landed on the expensive one... or an injury.

This matters most in corporate wellness, where utilization data drives program ROI. Employees don't file a ticket when a machine feels "off." They just quietly stop using it, and your engagement numbers slide for reasons nobody can explain.

"It still turns on" is not a maintenance strategy. It's a countdown.

The facilities that win track condition, not just on/off status.

What's your team actually measuring... uptime, or just power?
Do they get on and test the unit?
