The United States Marine Corps (USMC) offers a **Career Intermission Program (CIP)**, designed to allow Marines to take a temporary break from active duty while preserving their ability to return to service. This program is intended to provide Marines with greater flexibility to manage personal or family needs, pursue educational opportunities, or handle other life events without completely leaving the service.

1. **Duration**:
Marines can take a break from active duty for a period of **one to three years**. During this time, they are placed in an inactive reserve status.

2. **Pay and Benefits**:
While on intermission, Marines receive **two times their base monthly pay**, but they do not receive their regular active-duty pay or allowances. Their healthcare benefits and some other active-duty benefits are suspended, though they can retain access to limited benefits like TRICARE Reserve Select.

3. **Return to Service**:
Marines are guaranteed the right to return to active duty at the end of the intermission. Upon returning, they are expected to serve **two months for every month they were in the CIP**.

4. **Eligibility**:
The program is available to both officers and enlisted personnel. Applicants must meet specific criteria, such as:
- Serving on active duty for at least four years.
- Having at least one year left on their current contract.
- Not being subject to certain adverse actions or pending disciplinary measures.
- Being medically qualified.

5. **Career Progression**:
Time spent in the CIP does not count toward promotion eligibility or retirement, but it provides a way for Marines to take care of personal obligations without permanently leaving the service.

The Career Intermission Program helps balance personal life demands with the needs of the Marine Corps, allowing for a more flexible career path.
