Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a wide spectrum of disorders marked by difficulties with speech, nonverbal communication, repetitive activities, and social skills. Function of behavior describes what purpose the behavior serves. There are 4 primary functions of behavior:
Attention
Escape/Avoidance
Access to Tangibles
Automatic/ Sensory

In order to bring meaningful behavior change to the lives of our members, we need to understand the behavior change in a manner that is safe, ethical, effective, and efficient.

To understand the behavior, we need to know the function or why it’s happening in the first place. Then, behavior analysts can make a plan for how to address the behavior moving forward.
