What happens in your school ?
✨ Everyone talks about 3rd grade reading scores… but those scores don’t start in 3rd grade.
👀 Despite whichever teacher’s name is on the test, there are years of instruction behind that data.
I’ve taught 1st, 3rd, and 4th grade, and worked in intervention across K–5… and I’ve seen this from every angle.
📊 Here’s the hard truth:
When students walk into 3rd grade on level, the work is so much more manageable.
But when a child falls a little behind in kindergarten and doesn’t catch up in 1st grade… that gap doesn’t stay small. It grows.
🧠We can’t keep putting band-aids on open wounds.
We have to look at the root of reading difficulty and so often, it starts in the primary grades.
💛 And please hear me on this… Primary teachers are working so hard. I have never been more exhausted than I was in 1st grade.
⚖️ But the gentle truth is this: In many schools, the urgency doesn’t match the impact. There’s often less pressure in K–1… even though the stakes are incredibly high.
🚨 Because “they’ll get it next year” isn’t a plan. It’s how gaps grow.
