Vote Yes for Public Safety - Helena Vote Yes for Public Safety supports adequately staffing the Helena Fire and Police Department so that they can provide the Essential Services Helena Needs!

We so appreciate Sean Logan - Helena City Commissioner for bringing the issue of police department staffing to the forefront. The Helena Police Protective Association saw this issue coming some time ago and despite our efforts to bring attention to it, it has gone largely unaddressed. For some time now, there has been very little emphasis put on recruiting new officers, retaining existing officers, and increasing our local police force proportionally to Helena's population growth. The result has been an increasing work load for existing HPD officers--many of whom have chosen to go to work for other law enforcement agencies or leave law enforcement all-together. And when filling these vacancies, it takes over a year for a new officer to make it through the hiring and training process and be able to work by themselves on patrol. So, you can see the issue: when officers leave, there is no 'quick fix' to replacing them.
And without decisive action to hire enough officers to keep up with local call demands and account for turnover, the staffing situation at HPD will continue to degrade, and officer retention rates will continue to fall. There are frequently as few as three officers on patrol to serve the entirety of the City of Helena...which is concerning from both the standpoint of promoting community safety and the safety of our officers. If you haven't already, give this radio show clip a listen. We would encourage you to reach out to your City Commissioners and ask them to act to rectify this situation.

To speak, you have to download Zoom, log into the meeting, and click the 'raise hand' button on the Zoom to speak. You will then be unmuted and allowed to speak when it is your turn.
