The definition of 'conundrum':
Sooo, my clients that I filed an extension for on April 15th will get a penalty if I don't efile their returns by Wednesday, however, the IRS is technically closed.

Another tax season comes to an end. April 15th, 2024 is the deadline for filing your tax returns, and it’s only the second tax season since 2019 that the April 15th deadline hasn’t been automatically extended for Californians by the IRS. Oh, well, it could be worse; you could be audited by the Three Stooges. Or maybe that would be better. A special thanks to Tricia for haunting my office on evenings after her daytime job in the graveyard. Thank you to Nora; I was worrying that I may have been underpaying you, but then I realized that I haven’t been paying you at all! And thank you to Laura, who calmed me down even better than a Xanax on those really stressful days. Well, maybe not that good.

Now why didn’t anybody think that one up before? Well, here we go again, the start of a new Tax Season. For tax preparers in California, it’s been a long rest….. eight weeks! Due to the 2022/2023 storms in California, it was a historic tax season for most Californians; Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day Memorial Day, Father’s Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Halloween and the entire Major League Baseball Season fell during tax season. This year, the jumping off day is January 29th, 2024 and taxes are due on April 15th, 2024. Once again, I’ll be getting messages on my answering machine saying “Hello! I was referred to you as someone who can do my tax return.” I’m always tempted to call them back and say, “I’m very proud of you, but you’re mistaken; I’ve never heard of you!”

Halloween is not as far off as it may seem, and neither is the October 16, 2023 tax deadline for California filers. Remember, there is no tax extension past October 16th. If you haven’t prepared your federal and state tax returns yet, you should start planning to get them completed.

Watch out! This is the newest IRS scam. A few of my clients have received this notice in their email. This is not an official Internal Revenue Service notification. They may make them look official, but their stupidity still comes through; starting with, 'Our record indicate' or ‘we have received your tax return for the fiscal year 2023’. If you get one of these notices in your email just delete it. Btw, I have never seen an IRS notice that starts with, ‘We hope this message finds you well.’

Today is May 15th, 2023, also MD+1, the day after Mother’s Day. This was originally the extended Tax Day for Californians due to storm damage, as I carefully noted it back in January and scratched it out in March when the deadline for filing taxes in California was extended further to October 16th, 2023. This would have been a hectic day, as would have yesterday, when for the third time, 2020 and 2021 included, Mother’s Day fell during Tax Season. So, we were able to give out roses to the few mothers who came in yesterday, and I’m taking today off.
