🚨 THE ELEVATOR MACHINE ROOM IS NO PLACE TO FREELANCE!

Walking into an elevator machine room and randomly throwing disconnects, pushing buttons, pulling levers, or touching equipment you don’t understand is NOT elevator rescue.

It’s gambling.

And the people trapped inside the elevator are the ones you’re gambling with.

That machine room contains high voltage, exposed rotating machinery, stored energy, hydraulic pressure, automatic equipment, and components directly controlling the movement of the elevator car.

🔥 DON’T TOUCH IT BECAUSE YOU THINK YOU KNOW WHAT IT DOES.

🔥 DON’T OPERATE IT BECAUSE SOMEONE ON THE RADIO TOLD YOU TO “TRY IT.”

🔥 DON’T ASSUME KILLING THE POWER MAKES THE ELEVATOR COMPLETELY SAFE.

Know the equipment. Understand the hazards. Control the energy. Communicate with your crews. Follow your Incident Response Procedures.

If your department doesn’t have written Incident Response Procedures (IRPs) in place, DRM can help you develop and implement them through our Elevator Emergency Management training programs.

The machine room is part of the rescue scene, and one bad decision upstairs, or downstairs, can create a serious problem for everyone involved.

Train like the elevator mechanic isn’t coming.

Because there’s a good chance…they aren’t.

It was toasty today, and after an hour stuck in this elevator, I'd about had it. Appreciate the help, @fdny! 07/05/2026

Adapting Elevator Rescue Tactics for Modern Systems

This is an excellent backup plan when the door operator is out of reach, or when you’re dealing with a newer linear-linkage door operator without the traditional large wheels.

Modern elevator systems are changing, and our tactics need to evolve with them. Know your options, understand the equipment in front of you, and always have a Plan B.

Nice job FDNY…

SIDE NOTE:

Firefighters need to learn how to perform as if the elevator mechanic isn’t coming. I will say this again and again and again.

This current heat wave caused an uptick in stalled occupied elevators. EVERYONE had their hands full.

Train for the gap—because waiting isn’t neutral.
