The most useful assistive technology might already be in your pocket.

Every smartphone ships with accessibility tools built in — free, no extra apps needed. A few worth trying:

Voice control — run your whole phone by talking to it.
Screen reader (VoiceOver on iPhone, TalkBack on Android) — hear what's on the screen.
Magnifier — turn the camera into a magnifying glass for menus, labels, and mail.
Live captions — real-time captions on any audio or video.
Text size and contrast — bump it up until it's comfortable.

Look under Settings → Accessibility and see what helps. There's no wrong way to use your own device.

We're halfway through 2026, so we stopped to add it up. Our Mid-Year CEO Report is out now — everything Thrive CIL has done across the first two quarters, from advocacy to people who moved out of nursing facilities and back into homes of their own.

A few numbers from the first half of the year: 47 new consumers, 21 people transitioned out of nursing facilities and back into the community, and 331 information and referral requests answered. The full picture is in the report.

On June 25th, Thrive CIL NHT Coordinator Pam Auer successfully transitioned Dan from a nursing facility back into the community right here in Central PA in Partnership with Dan's PHW Service Coordinator Gabriella.
Through our Nursing Home Transition program, we partner with Managed Care Organizations to help people with disabilities leave nursing facilities and return to community living on their own terms. Moments like Dan's are exactly why we do this work.
