Huneebee Project

if you’ve stopped by our gardens or our farmers market over the years, chances are you’ve met Jim. And if you haven’t, we’d like to change that!
Jim has been a Board member and Huneebee volunteer for years, and he’s the heart behind our flower beds. a true dahlia connoisseur, he spends hours cultivating blooms across our two growing flower sites in New Haven. he spreadsheets and plans, he plants and stakes, he weeds and cuts, and he arranges each bouquet with, in his favorite scenario, unsuspecting recipients in mind. this year, Jim helped us plant nearly 20 varieties of dahlias!
we’re also excited to be back at the Sunday Farmers Market after our first market of the season on June 28! as the summer unfolds, you’ll see more and more of Jim’s flowers making their way to our market stand alongside our local honey and other Huneebee goods.
so if you see Jim in the field or at the market, be sure to say hello. don’t be shy, and ask him about dahlias. you might learn more than you expected. his generosity, knowledge, and steady commitment have helped our gardens grow in size and color, and we’re grateful to have him as part of the Huneebee family.
🌼 see you Sundays. the dahlias are on their way. 🌼

insights from Jamie, a BKIR grad, beekeeping apprentice, and, most recently, community beekeeper at Huneebee’s garden in Fair Haven.
BKIR (Beekeepers in Residence) is Huneebee’s signature therapeutic and workforce development program for teens and young adults who are systems impacted. participants learn the art and science of beekeeping while developing meaningful connections, mindfulness strategies, leadership, resilience, and transferable job skills - facilitating healing and preparing them for future successes far beyond the hive.
