Nadeau Farm
So I sign into our page and on the top as usual "what's on your mind". Well hold on here goes. Farming is challenging and full of change and adaption. From when the first people started excluding undesirable plants to let the ones they want flourish to where we are today. The current small farm has to find ways to be different, attract customers and hopefully make enough money to survive. I was told years ago "you can't just sell a farm product anymore, you also need to entertain people". Many farms have tried this including ours. But interest fades and new ideas are few. So we try back to the basics. We know local products are the freshest and best for us. But we watch friends and neighbors drive by and go to the big supermarkets. There they support a global economy that has helped destroy our own local economy and environment. Not only do we import the products consumers want but we also import problems. Look around, how many species of trees have died off from foreign insects. How many invasive plants have crowded out the native ones. How many farms have been turned into housing developments that are further dependent on imports. It's like a nuclear chain reaction and won't end till it all collapses.
When I grew up in this town we had everything we needed here. A good blend of farms, retail stores, and industry. You rarely needed to leave town to get what you needed. Now it's mostly a bedroom town. Farms and industry are hardly a shadow of what they were. Retail stores come and go, sometimes before you know they existed.
But some of us are just old and stubborn. So this is what's on my mind as I finish my chores and dump older unsold eggs (not as old as the ones in the supermarket) into the compost.
So never a dull moment here at Nadeau Farm . This morning our water pressure started getting low. I've been a bit concerned about this due to the drought conditions. Well, turns out Alfie our mini mule was playing with one of the yard hydrants and turned it on. It likely ran for an hour or so before the low pressure switch tripped. An easy fix but a caution of the low ground water conditions that exist.
