Some food memories stay with you.
On my birthday, my mom brought home chocolate cake from Marshall Field’s. Same place. Same tradition. We recreated the department-store style version from memory.
Chocolate fudge cake. Bake at 350°F.
Cake
Flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, salt, eggs, milk, oil, vanilla, hot coffee.
Mix dry. Add wet. Stir in coffee last. Batter stays thin.
Bake 3 pans for 30–35 minutes or 4 pans for 22–26 minutes. Cool fully.
Fudge frosting
Butter, cream, cocoa, powdered sugar, vanilla, salt.
Melt butter. Whisk cocoa and cream. Warm until smooth. Stir in sugar and vanilla. Let thicken.
