𝗠𝗔𝗗𝗥𝗜𝗗, 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗜𝗡 — 𝟰𝟵-𝗦𝗧𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗢𝗙𝗙𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗧𝗢𝗪𝗘𝗥 𝗙𝗜𝗥𝗘 | Another reminder that smoke—not fire—is still the primary killer in high-rise incidents.

Yesterday’s fire in a 49-story office tower in Madrid required the evacuation of hundreds of occupants down protected stairwells.

While the fire itself was ultimately contained, the incident reinforces several lessons:

• 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.
• 𝘉𝘶𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳.

As firefighters, we often focus on getting water on the fire. High-rise incidents remind us that managing people and managing smoke are equally important.
