Stanton House Inn

Room 18 is the room I actually grew up in.

Before it was my bedroom, it was a sleeping porch. If you're not familiar with the term, it goes back to before air conditioning. A lot of old historic houses had a semi-outdoor space where the family slept in the summer to stay cool. The theory was sound. The reality, in this house anyway, was that the walls weren't particularly well insulated. So the room was hot in summer and cold in winter.

It also had a private door to the outside. For a six-year-old, that was apparently a source of considerable parental anxiety. I don't remember being troubled by it. For me it just meant easy access to the century-old copper beech in the yard, where I'd dig for bugs.
