Now blooming in Greenville!
The common pawpaw (Asimina triloba) grows in shady, hardwood bottomlands with moist, fertile soils. It is a small understory tree that can grow up to 40 feet in height, and is native to and adapted to diverse climatic conditions. Native to the Eastern US from the Great Lakes down through the Piedmont, pawpaw fruit is the largest tree fruit native to the United States!
If you are lucky enough to find one in bloom, give the flower a quick smell; it has a faint (but possibly not so-pleasant) odor that attracts pollinators such as flies and carrion beetles. They are also protogynous, which means they have both female and male reproductive parts; the stigmas and anthers mature in sequence, in order to cross-pollinate with other trees.
