This news article is inspiring and encouraging, in some ways. But it also just reveals how close to the edge our society is. Even in places like... Seattle. Which seems to get a whole lot less bad press than Portland.
The myth of capitalism is that if you need an extra $500 each month to achieve your goals, you take a second job. But the very success of this program reveals how many people really desperately wanted to work, but couldn't without the capital to first stabilize their own situation. I am guessing that most of these UBI payments went towards transportation, child support, or being able to afford better housing. I have no way of knowing.
