Lost Forty Tree Farm

a walnut seedling about 2 weeks old. it can live off the nutrients in the nut for 4-6 weeks. after that the nut is depleted, and the new seedling has to live off it`s own new roots for a water supply . it has to have enough leaves to get energy from the sun. with a little luck the nut has provided enough energy to grow both roots and a top with leaves. if it is in shade, it dies, if it does not get enough water, it dies. all in all quite a miracle, no matter if a new born plant or a new born animal.

rooster update. no one has eaten him yet. he is roosting in the wood shed. crows at 4 a.m. every morning. struts around the front yard all day like he owns the place. has discovered the dog food and water bowls on the front porch. sits on the back of the church pew on the front porch and looks in the window to watch the television. I would say he has it made. now if we could just teach him to trim christmas trees.

WE HAVE A CHICKEN! jade at redhead homestead had an extra rooster she did not need so we were the recipients. when the girls were little we had chickens, ducks, and turkeys. this is the first chicken on the farm in about 35 years. when I was young boy I had a pet banty that would sleep with me and lay on my cheek all night purring. brrr, brrr, brrr, chicken talk. it went everywhere with me. when on my bike it would ride on the handle bars. fond memories of my carefree youth. my mother was a saint I think, allowing all my pet foxes, c***s, groundhogs, `possums, and my chicken in the house. some were banned but got snuck in thru my bedroom window at night, lol, which I sometimes snuck out thru......
walked to the bridge to see how high the creek was after yesterdays big rain. there was a beaver swimming around, not afraid of us at all. I suppose the flooding ran it out of it`s bank den. this time of the year there is not just a single beaver, so we know we have a family somewhere up or down stream. even if beavers can be a big problem we hope the young were old enough to get out of the flooding
