We noticed a few questions about shelters during storms. We wanted to provide some information for you.

SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY: Do’s & Don’ts

THE DON'TS
• DON'T stay in your car: A vehicle is the LEAST SAFE place to be during severe weather.

• DON’T get under an overpass or bridge. You are safer in a low flat location.

• DON'T go to fire stations or hospitals: They are NOT storm shelters. First responders and medical staff need their facilities clear so they can focus on active emergencies.

• DON'T rely on social media hearsay: Rumors spread fast. Only trust updates from reliable sources including public safety agencies such as police, fire, emergency management or the National Weather Service.

Know the Difference: Storm Shelter vs. Disaster Shelter
• Storm Shelter (Before & During): A safe place to shelter while a storm is approaching and passing. It is important to identify this location prior to needing it. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE to determine your shelter location.

• Disaster Shelter (After): A place set up after the storm has passed for families displaced by damage. These will be announced if/when established.

THE DO'S: Your Best Storm Shelter Options If a storm is approaching and you need to shelter right now, look for:
1. A basement (yours or a neighbor's, with prior permission).
2. An interior, first-floor room completely away from windows and doors (like a central closet, hallway, or bathroom).
3. Designated shelter areas provided by some mobile home parks and apartment complexes.

Stay safe, stay informed, and get your news straight from official local authorities!
