The last known thylacine, often called Benjamin, was captured in 1933 by trapper Elias Churchill in Tasmania’s Florentine Valley. Transported to Beaumaris Zoo in Hobart, it became the final captive specimen, filmed that year by naturalist David Fleay, highlighting the species’ dire plight.

Despite protection granted in 1936, the thylacine died from exposure on September 7 at the zoo, two months later. This marked the extinction of the Tasmanian Tiger, driven by bounties and habitat loss, leaving a legacy of regret in conservation history.
