I posted this in 2016. Not much has changed except that the cost of living has increased exponentially! 

I get asked why most people file bankruptcy. There is a stigma that people file because they are irresponsible with money. Sometimes this is true. Especially when we are young. Our parents and school systems did not set us up for financial responsibility, for the most part! The number one reason that I see people filing is uninsured medical bills. The number 2 reason appears to be loss of income, or loss of job that is not replaceable in today's economy. Thirdly, people get in over their head with credit cards just trying to survive.. It is also very common to see repossessions on vehicles that broke down or were too expensive for the buyer to maintain. Repossessions typically result in lawsuits and then wage garnishments. Once a person experiences wage garnishment, they cannot even pay basic living expenses and then they end up in my office. Talk to me BEFORE your wages and bank accounts are garnished!!
