Protect Your Dog from Parvovirus (Parvo)🐾
Canine parvovirus (parvo) is a **highly contagious and potentially fatal virus** that affects dogs of all ages. While puppies between 6 weeks and 6 months of age are the most vulnerable because their immune systems are still developing and they may not be fully vaccinated, adult dogs can also become infected if they are unvaccinated or not adequately protected.
How is parvo spread?
Parvo is transmitted through the "fecal-oral route". This means a dog becomes infected by ingesting microscopic particles of f***s from an infected dog. Because the virus is incredibly resilient, it can easily be carried on everyday items such as:
* Food and water bowls
* Leashes and collars
* Toys
* Kennels and crates
* Shoes and clothing
* Human hands
* Grass, soil, sidewalks, and other outdoor surfaces
The virus is extremely hardy and can survive in the environment for months to a year, making it easy for dogs to encounter it even when an infected dog is no longer present.
How can you protect your dog?
✔ Keep your puppy on the recommended vaccination schedule.
✔ Ensure adult dogs stay current on their parvo vaccinations.
✔ Avoid taking unvaccinated dogs to areas where many dogs have been until they are fully vaccinated.
✔ Clean and disinfect contaminated areas with products proven to kill parvovirus (ordinary household cleaners are often ineffective).
✔ Practice good hygiene by washing your hands and cleaning shoes and equipment after visiting places where dogs gather.
Parvo can be very expensive to treat, and despite intensive veterinary care, some dogs do not survive. Vaccination and prevention remain the safest and most effective ways to protect your pet.
If you have any questions about your dog's vaccination status or believe your dog may have been exposed to parvo, contact your veterinarian right away.
