My disability doesn't stop me from being adventurous, but sometimes inaccessibility does.

People often assume that the biggest barrier to disabled people exploring the world is our disability itself. In reality, many of us are willing and fully ready for the adventure. What gets in the way is the lack of access.

I love road trips, museums, nature centers, festivals, and discovering new places. I enjoy making memories with my family. My disability hasn't taken away my curiosity about the world around me.

What can make those experiences difficult is arriving somewhere and finding stairs without a ramp, inaccessible restrooms, broken elevators, or a lack of accessible parking.

There have been times when I've spent hours planning an outing, only to arrive and discover that the information wasn't accurate.

My ambition isn't limited, but sometimes, the environment around me is.

When spaces are accessible, I can focus on the adventure instead of the obstacles.

It is okay to use different mobility aids on different days.

Disability is not always predictable. Pain levels, energy, balance, strength, and symptoms can change from one day to the next.

What works today might not work tomorrow, and that is completely okay.

Using a cane one day and a wheelchair the next does not make you a fraud.

Using a walker for longer outings but walking independently at home does not mean you're exaggerating your needs.

You're just giving yourself the support you need in the moment.

Mobility aids are tools. Their purpose is to help you move through the world safely and comfortably.

The "right" mobility aid is simply the one that helps you the most on that particular day.

The image is framed on all sides by a watercolor-style border of flowers and greenery. Along the bottom of the graphic are illustrations of a manual wheelchair, a rollator walker with forearm supports, a cane, and a pair of forearm crutches.

Words Matter: Disability is not a bad word. Avoid euphemisms like “differently-abled."

Using vague or softened language can minimize real experiences and barriers. Be clear, respectful, and accurate–say “disability.”
