For hundreds of years, traditional masculinity turned boys into men through disconnection.

Disconnection from ourselves first, and from others.
That’s why you cant name what you’re feeling, talk about emotions, or know who you are outside of work.

They called it independence, but it actually creates this isolating individualism.

Being a man requires us to disconnect from vulnerability, feelings, and others.

As men grow and face emotional pain, they’re taught to mask it through becoming better , or receding into shame.

So when you enter adult relationships where emotional intimacy is expected, you’ve been trained to suppress the very skills and empathy they need to connect.

And without understanding this, skills and self help won’t work,

because you’re trying to teach you tactics for a worldview that’s largely missing,
which is the relational worldview.

To be in relationship means to be relational, and men who lack relationality will either not see the venture as worthwhile,

or have no ability to enact those behaviors and fall into a spiral of shame or blame.

So the first step in helping men become better partners is naming the relationality that’s been severed from them.

Starting with the relationship with self,

which is as simple as noticing what it feels like to be you, in your body, and taking stock of it as you forge a connection with yourself.
