Tips to Maintaining Windows System Integrity

Keep spyware, viruses and pups (probably unwanted programs) out
and keep the system and browser running right.

Use an anti-virus program that you feel confident with and that you can operate. (AVAST! Free Antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials (not for XP), and AVG Free are best).
Scan the system manually at least weekly
Update virus definitions at least weekly
Set automatic scanning, but double-check any “automatic” settings routinely
Windows has a built in firewall- be sure it’s on.

Use anti-spyware program(s) that you feel confident with and that you can operate, (MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware) to scan and remove bad objects at least weekly.
Check for updates while online, before scanning.

Go to Start | Programs | Windows Update every week or two and scan for updates. Set for automatic at time when computer is usually on.
Be sure to install critical updates and security patches

Manage Add-ons in browser. Disable any undesirable or unneeded “search” add-ons.
Control Panel | Internet options | Programs tab | Manage add-ons button | disable undesirable add-ons (no name or damaged).

Remove temporary files in the browser
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab | Browsing history | Delete button |
check Temporary Internet Files | click Delete button

Run the System Configuration Utility and manage items starting up automatically, especially the Startup tab items.
Start | Run | type in: msconfig, then hit ok or Enter key. Startup tab, uncheck unwanted/unknown items (disable all and reboot if system is running very poorly).

Defrag and error-check every month or so. Necessary to keep the computer running well.
Double-click My Computer | right click Drive C: | Properties | Tools and run defragmentation utility and error checking (next reboot ok)
Clean out unnecessary files every month or so- Disk Cleanup (button)
