Jaw dropping light pillars near Poland, ND during an arctic air outbreak in early January! Ice pillars are only common when temperatures plummet below 0F. In these conditions, ice crystals in a dendritic formation, refract light upwards into neat pillars. On this night, temperatures were as cold as -15F.
