Week 1 of our Growcery Bag Program ✅

The Growcery Bag program is one way Backyard Growers Program increases access to high-quality, seasonal produce in our community while reducing food waste and adding extra support for the Growcery's farmers. Every week, we purchase extra produce from farmers at the end of the market and donate it to the corner market at The Open Door food pantry. We also facilitate donations from farmers, handling the transportation and paper work.

This week, we were able to donate over 140 lbs of produce - over 15 bunches of beets, 30+ summer squash, and so much more.

Thank you again to our farms who participated this week, First Light Farm, CSA & Pleasant Valley Gardens: The Bonanno Family Farm. And, thanks to our community for supporting this program.

💚 We're grateful to Jen Perry, Director of People & Culture at The Open Door, for her eleven years of service on the Backyard Growers Board of Directors, including her leadership as President. While Jen is now concluding her time on the Board, she has been a steadfast supporter of Backyard Growers' mission to create equitable access to the resources people in our community need to grow their own food, and she has seen the organization through tremendous growth and transition.

Thank you Jen for being such an incredible leader and partner in our work! As Jen steps down, Suzanne Clerkin steps into the role of President of the Board alongside four new members of the Board of Directors. 🎉 We're celebrating the redesign and rebuild of Riverdale Park Community Garden this season, supported by Backyard Growers! 💚 This space brings together 21 residents of this Gloucester Housing Authority neighborhood to grow fresh food in brand new garden beds built by our pals at The Cornerstone Creative. Shout-out to the crew at Boston Fence for being wonderful to work with at this site and others this spring.

Our team is especially energized by this updated community garden space this year, as it brings together speakers of Haitian Creole, Arabic, Spanish, and English, with many neighbors choosing to share garden beds to grow together.

Plus, the whole community can enjoy two new garden beds for communal growing by the community center nearby.

Happy growing, Riverdale!
