Discover Gettysburg
You're looking at one of Gettysburg's hidden gems — the monument to the 7th Maine Infantry, standing on Neill Avenue, also known as the Lost Avenue. Dedicated by the State of Maine in 1889, this nine-foot granite memorial was actually designed by the regiment's own commander at Gettysburg, Lieutenant Colonel Selden Connor. Notice the design: a National Shield, marked with the Greek cross of the Sixth Corps, leaning against a rugged boulder — symbolizing strength held in reserve. On July 3rd, 1863, while Pickett's Charge raged to the west, the 7th Maine — just 261 men in six companies — advanced here to protect the Union's vital Baltimore Pike supply line. They pushed back Confederate skirmishers on Wolf Hill, suffering only six wounded. It's quiet here today, surrounded by trees and private land, but the inscription remains: 7th Maine Infantry, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Corps — July 3rd, 1863."
