The monument to the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves (the “Bucktails”) was dedicated by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in 1890. The nickname “Bucktails” came from the buck tail that each man wore on his hat, proclaiming their ability as marksmen.
The 13th Pennsylvania was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Colonel Charles F. Taylor. He was killed on July 2nd, and Major William R. Hartshorne then took command.
The monument is south of Gettysburg in the loop of Ayers Avenue about 0.2 mile south of Wheatfield Road. Ayers Avenue is one way southbound. (39°47’42.9″N 77°14’28.9″W)
H/T to Stone Sentinels website. A GREAT resource on monuments not only at Gettysburg but on other battlefields as well.
