In 1934, the Statler in Detroit, MI, became the first lodging facility in America to install a central air conditioning system. Public spaces were cooled by AC, but guest rooms and office spaces were not.

While modern motels and hotels share a lot of the same features and amenities, the main difference is in layout. Hotels traditionally have the doors to rooms facing into an interior hallway, while motel doors are oriented toward the outside of the building.

From 1925 to 1947, more than 22,000 motels were built in the US. Motels were quicker and cheaper to build than hotels, and they were much more inexpensive to operate. How-to magazines published plans and instructions for converting unprofitable farmland into profitable motels for weary interstate travelers.
