Georgetown Fire Department

At approximately 4:15pm on Thursday, Jul 2, the Georgetown Fire Department was dispatched to 20 Elm Street for a report of fire alarms sounding and a fire in the home. Upon arrival, firefighters made entry into the house, where firefighters found a smoke condition and a fire in a bedroom.

First arriving units quickly extinguished the flames, limiting damage to the home.

Mutual aid responded to the scene from the Rowley Fire Department, Boxford Fire Department, Newbury Fire Department, and Groveland Fire Rescue. Newburyport Fire Department and the Ipswich Fire Department provided station coverage.

The fire is currently under investigation by both the Georgetown Police and Fire Departments along with the State Fire Marshalls Office.

There were no reported injuries to either the home’s residents or firefighters.

The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado watch for the Georgetown area valid until 7:00pm this evening.

A tornado watch means that tornadoes are possible in and near the watch area. Review and discuss your emergency plans, take inventory of your supplies and check your safe room. Be ready to act quickly if a warning is issued or you suspect a tornado is approaching. Acting early helps to save lives! Watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center for counties where tornadoes may occur. The watch area is typically large, covering numerous counties or even states.

Please keep an eye to the sky and listen to local weather reports. If a tornado does develop, seek shelter immediatly in the basement of a home or if a basement is not available in the lowst floor in a windowless interior room such as a bathroom, closet, or hallway.

Remember, a tornado watch does not mean a tornado is imminent, but atmospheric conditions may be condusive to the formation of one.

**Public Service Announcement** - 5/20/26

This morning, the Georgetown Police and Georgetown Fire Department will be conducting a mock accident at the Georgetown Middle High School, to demonstrate the dangers of impaired driving.

This drill is conducted every couple of years for the Junior and Senior classes ahead of their prom, and is organized by School Resource Officer DeVito.

The drill will run between approximately 8:30am and 9:00am. If you see or hear a heavy public safety presence in this area, please do not be alarmed.
