Unpopular Opinion: The Igbo people might actually be one of the most united groups in Nigeria — and here’s why. When we talk about “unity,” we often confuse it with the absence of disagreements. But if we look around Nigeria’s social and political space, clashes and rivalries are everywhere. Think of public feuds like Wizkid vs Davido, Seun Kuti vs Wizkid, or political rivalries such as Olusegun Obasanjo vs Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar vs Muhammadu Buhari, and contests involving Rabiu Kwankwaso and Nuhu Ribadu. These disagreements rarely get framed as proof that any tribe is “not united.”Yet when similar tensions happen among Igbo public figures like Phyno and Flavour, people are quick to generalize and question Igbo unity. That contrast raises an interesting point: unity isn’t about never having conflicts — it’s about shared interests and collective direction.Across Nigeria, elites with common goals often align regardless of background. Meanwhile, narratives dating back to the aftermath of the Nigerian Civil War have shaped perceptions about regional cohesion, especially concerning the Igbo. Whether one agrees or not, it’s worth asking how much of what we call “disunity” is reality versus long-standing narrative. At the end of the day, every community has internal debates. The real measure of unity may lie in how people rally around shared goals despite differences. What do you think — is unity about agreement, or about common purpose?
