At 5:48PM today Gaston Fire was dispatched to a brush fire near 27441 Hwy 47, just South of Gaston. We responded with 2 Brush rigs, a tender, a utility, and 2 Chief Officers.
On arrival, units found about half an acre of hay stubble and a small number of hay bales on fire. Winds were pushing the fire towards an uncut field and a home. We upgraded to a first alarm adding a water tender and heavy brush from Forest Grove Fire & Rescue as well as a heavy brush from Carlton Fire Dist. Station 7.
We immediately attacked the head of the fire and stopped it's forward progress. Crews worked to suppress the rest of the fire for another 20 minutes and then overhauled the area.
It was determined that the fire was caused by a malfunctioning hay baler. We hope they are able to repair their equipment soon.
Thanks to Forest Grove Fire & Rescue and Carlton Fire Dist. Station 7 for their assistance. And thanks to Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue E19 and HB19 for covering our station while we were working this fire.
