A lot of people ask about recording guitar. Different things like, mics, mic placement, amps, speakers, strings and so on. But one thing people seem to over look is the difference between a live performance guitar tone and a recording guitar tone. The truth is that in the studio AND live situations, the tone really depends on the reference of the other instruments.

I saw Sterling Winfield share a post last week from Joey Sturgis. Both are big names in the production of rock and metal music. So these guys know what they are talking about.
The post said:
90% of ALL good mixes come from the source signal. As someone who has been recording music since 2008, I can tell you that this is 100% true.

For me it is best to track guitars to the mix. What I mean by that is to track bass and drums first. THEN you can dial in the best guitar tone for cutting through the mix. Making it an excellent source signal. This makes mixing your guitars much easier.
