To the MCPS employees who learned today that you will not be returning in the fall: I am sorry. I am angry too. You did nothing to deserve this. I will keep working with our labor partners, with the Board, and with the school system to support every one of you through what comes next.
🚨Statement of SEIU 500 on the Montgomery County Board of Education’s Vote to Cut Jobs
Rockville, MD - Today, in response to the Board of Education’s decision to adopt the cuts proposed by the MCPS Superintendent and eliminate critical positions across the school district, Travis B. Simon, Executive Director of SEIU 500, released the following statement:
“We are deeply disappointed by the Board of Education’s decision to eliminate these vital support staff positions. These cuts will have a detrimental impact on employee workloads, professional development opportunities, and, most importantly, the students and communities — particularly communities of color, first generation, and new students — who rely on these essential services every day.
“SEIU 500 will continue to advocate aggressively for our members and the students they serve. We will also ensure that MCPS fully complies with our collective bargaining agreement as this process moves forward.
“This decision is yet another reminder that Montgomery County must develop long-term, sustainable solutions to adequately fund public education and protect the services that students need to succeed.”
