People faced allergies long before the appearance of the term itself.
The first person who was seriously interested in this was the great physician Hippocrates. As early as the fifth century BCE he described strange skin rashes and severe indigestion that some of his patients had after eating certain foods. Later Galen, a Roman physician of Greek descent in the second century BCE, described allergy rhinitis without knowing it. He was surprised to see a man start sneezing hard after sniffing the rose.
But the term “allergy” appeared only in the beginning of the twentieth century. It was created by Austrian pediatrician Clemens Pirke in 1906. The scientist named this phenomenon “allergy” (from two Greek words “allos”- other and “ergia” – ability to act).
As soon as the disease had a name, everyone immediately wanted to study it. Many questions were raised: How to distinguish allergies from other diseases? Why does it appear? How to deal with it? To answer all these questions, it was necessary to create a specialty in medicine, allergology, the science of allergy. Foreign substances to which the body reacts,
were named “allergens”. The immune system that every person has is activated at the right time, finds the “enemy” and destroys it. This set of security measures is called an immune response. However, sometimes breakdowns occur in the immune system, and it begins to react to completely harmless substances. The body triggers self-destructive immune overreactions.
Almost 100 years have passed since the term allergy appeared. During this time almost, everything became known about allergies. Only one question remained unclear, the most important – why does the immune system fail, which leads to allergies? Doctors are perplexed and talk about factors that can affect the appearance of allergies: poor environmental situations, stress, uncontrolled use of antibiotics and other medicines, or an unhealthy diet. And scientists sadly state that without knowing exactly the original cause of an allergy, one cannot get rid of it once and for all. You can only treat allergy symptoms during outbreaks, by making the life of allergy sufferers more bearable.
