UPDATE: Potential Oakwood ICE facility remains off the table, city ready to file suit 07/14/2026

UPDATE: Oakwood Mayor Lamar Scroggs posted a message before Monday's meeting regarding the proposed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility. In it, he described little update to the situation, but did note they are ready to file suit against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) if they see renovations or land disturbance activity.

After the meeting, The Rainbow Collective Chairman Matéo Penado told Access North Georgia he wanted to see immediate action, citing an instance in Roxbury, New Jersey of ICE reversing course, and raised concerns about the cameras placed around the property owned by DHS.

Penado said he spoke to Mayor Scroggs after the meeting, with the mayor mentioning needing to pay attorney fees.

"There are attorneys who've offered free legal services to the City of Oakwood so there's no reason to delay suing DHS," Penado said.

City Manager B.R. White provided insight into the cameras on the property and said they have a lawsuit ready to file.

"There's some external security cameras ... I think there's about five or six units ... and also last week there were a line of cars in the turning lane ... it looks like they were brining in a four-wheel, all-terrain, air-conditioned vehicle to be used by security personnel," White said. "The suit is prepared. It is written and ready to be filed."

It is important to note the actions DHS have taken thus far with the cameras is not enough for city officials to file suit just yet, as it is not considered renovation or land disturbance activity to them.

The meeting adjourned in roughly 10-minutes, and no one utilized the public comment section.

UPDATE: Potential Oakwood ICE facility remains off the table, city ready to file suit As Oakwood residents grapple with the uncertainty of the proposed U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) warehouse, many plan to pack city hall Monday night to demand answers.
