Rib flare isn’t just about the ribs—and it isn’t something everyone needs to “fix.”
Rib flare is often a sign of how your rib cage breathes, moves, and is supported. Ideally, your ribs should expand 360° (front, sides, and back), not just lift forward with every inhale.
What helps?
— A full breath that expands all sides of the rib cage
— A complete exhale that lets the ribs settle
— Shoulder blades that move freely around the rib cage
— Muscles around the shoulders and core working together to support breathing
It’s also important to remember that not all rib flare is dysfunctional. Some people naturally have a wider rib angle or rib shape, and that’s simply their anatomy—not something that needs correcting.
The goal isn’t perfectly “flat” ribs. It’s a rib cage that can move well, breathe well, and support the rest of your body.
When your breath has room to expand and your body is well supported, it doesn’t have to compensate—and movement becomes much more efficient.
