Be prepared
Are you and your pets ready for the 4th of July? š
Fireworks are fun for us, but frightening for pets!
Every year, shelters like ours see an increase in lost pets after fireworks scare them into jumping fences, slipping collars, or bolting through open doors. A little preparation now can help keep your furry family members safe and calm.
Here are a few ways to help your pets this Fourth of July:
š Keep them indoors before fireworks begin.
šŖ Make sure doors, gates, and windows are secure.
šµ Close the curtains and play music or turn on the TV to help mask the noise.
š§ø Give them a favorite toy, treat, or safe place to hide if they're feeling nervous.
š Walk dogs early in the day - before fireworks start.
š·ļø Double check that their collar fits properly and that their microchip information is up to date. If they don't have a microchip, make sure they have your contact information either on a tag around their collar, or written on the collar.
If you know your pet finds fireworks difficult, talk to your veterinarian before the holiday about ways to help them stay comfortable.
Even pets who have never been afraid of fireworks can panic unexpectedly. Taking a few simple precautions now can make all the difference. Let's make sure the only thing lighting up the night is the sky - not our shelter intake with frightened, lost pets.
