May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and watching out for our mental health has never been more important.

I have a lifetime of half-finished notebooks and notepads on my bookshelf, full of lyrics, setlists, musical ideas, and just random stuff.

A couple of years ago, I decided I wanted to write a book, my life story, because it has been a fu**in ride.

But that quickly turned into journaling just to deal with daily life. When I feel like no one is really listening, I can write it all down and it feels like I’ve gotten it off my chest.

And these books are just for me, totally confidential, and crucial to processing the things I go through, both good and bad.

Our minds are incredibly powerful. When I was a kid, I thought Professor X was lame. Why would this dude with no super powers be the most powerful mutant?

Well, I understand now. Our minds can take us to some dark places, but we have to do the daily work to stay in command as much as possible.

If it’s journaling, having a beer with friends, taking a walk, meditating, or just expressing gratitude for anything at all, like the nice green grass or that bird singing when you wake up in the morning, it’s worth it.

A good number of the songs I’ve written are just me trying to get through the moment. Sadness becoming empowerment within the span of a song.

I’m grateful that something has come out of it and that my writing has been helpful to my loved ones.
