Have you seen the art on our walls lately? Katrina Rocha was one of our featured artist for our July Artwalk and we are ecstatic with her work. Her ability to depict leaves for their true essence is incredible. It’s a also a plus that the containers she paints are beautiful alcohol bottles. As plant lovers we know everything is better with plants. Katrina is a CSUF alumni and we are so proud to showcase her work this month. Huge thank you to Katrina for the collab! Happy Independence Day from this Showstopper- the Rose Glow Caladium! This Plant of the Week is fireworks without the annoying booms or damage to our air quality. The one way it is similar to fireworks would be its toxicity, please make sure to keep this plant away from pets and small humans as ingesting it can cause illness. Caladiums are a great addition to a collection as their showy leaves last much longer when placed indoors. As an outdoor perennial, plants are active in the spring and summer but when indoors you see plenty of beautiful leaves through the fall.

Native to Brazil, this plant will love additional humidity and will thank you by producing more leaves. Pebble trays or humidifiers can assist with this. The most important thing to keep in mind with caladiums is to protect the beautiful leaves, medium light is best to prevent scorching the leaves. Keep this plant away from AC vents or other drafty areas as it can cause unnecessary stress to the leaves. During the warmer months, keep soil moist until fall comes around. Caladiums love acidic soil and potassium so get those coffee grounds in the soil. When leaves start falling, scale back the watering and prune. If you want a bushier caladium a great tip is to snip the main bulb to produce more the secondary leaves and create a fuller plant. Caladiums can go dormant in the fall and winter months as most tubulars do but do not worry, they’ll be back!!
