Harvey Remodel

09/01/2017

Our hearts go out to all effected by this unprecedented storm, we are with you from before it to forever after. This is OUR home too. I put this together to help those who may feel overwhelmed or confused by the claim/cleanup/contractor/rebuilding process, We hope it helps..

FOR THOSE EFFECTED/DAMAGED BY HARVEY!
5 Tips for working with your Insurance/Contractor-
1. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING with photos- Before throwing anything away try to get serial and model numbers in a photo for record. Prepare to give your adjuster a thumb drive or CD with these as emails will become too huge.
2. MITIGATE FURTHER DAMAGES- If your home flooded, do NOT wait until the adjuster comes to do anything. Kick in the walls effected at the bottom (to help drain) and begin clean-up. (Your adjuster will have to wait/wade through the muck which may delay your claim.)
3. INVENTORY EVERYTHING-
Make lists of each room. Try to remember dates, costs, and specifics of ANYTHING over $100. Photograph a close-up of the damage and an overview of the item. Receipts are helpful but NOT mandatory.
4. BEWARE OF CONTRACTORS who offer a "one time" or "extra inventory" or "if you sign now" deal. There are A LOT of them out there. If it sounds too good to be true it usually is. Use LOCAL contractors. A warranty is only as good as the integrity of the person offering it. Will they be around once this is over if an issue arises?
5. DO NOT SIGN ANY CONTRACT IF YOU DON'T COMPLETELY UNDERSTAND THE FINE PRINT- Many contractors will say they will "help" you with your insurance. Some of it may be genuine, but unfortunately some are looking to maximize their profits. Beware of the fine print (usually on the back) which in some cases actually gives them power of attorney regarding your claim. I have seen people who cannot speak to their own insurance company because they signed this right away (as well as their PAYEE status on the check) over to the contractor. This isn't right and happens WAY too much.
Please call/text/email if you have any questions and we'll do our best to try to help answer them.
