Today we honor the 57th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. On this day in 1969, LGBTQ+ working-class people took a stand against the discriminatory and violent raids of gay bars and clubs in New York City.

Prior to these events, the labor movement largely ignored employer discrimination based on sexual orientation. After Stonewall and allyship with the gay rights movement, the labor movement began officially recognizing that discrimination based on sexual orientation was another assault on working people, one that victimized union members and weakened efforts of solidarity among working families.

As teachers and union members, we must continue to hold the flame sparked almost 60 years ago and to uphold and advocate for the rights we all deserve.
